Cinnabar Moth (Tyria jacobaeae)

Size: up to 30mm

Photographed in Coatham Woods, Stockton-on-Tees. 03/07/10

Seen July to September



Found in dry grassland, sand dunes, heath and other open grassland including gardens and woodland rides.


Feeds mainly on common ragwort (Senecio jacobaea).

Drinker Moth (Euthrix potatoria)

Seen August to June.



Found in damp grassland, bogs, fens and marshes.  On moor and heathland, damp woodland, and gardens.

Food plants include course grasses such as cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata)and couch (Agropyron repens). Common reed (Phragmites communis), reed canary grass (Phalaris arundinacea)  and wood small reed (Calamagrostis epigejos).

Elephant Hawk Moth (Deilephila elpenor)

Seen late June to September



Found in rough grassland with disturbed ground, hedgerows, ditches, gardens, woodland rides, heath and dunes.

Food plants include rosebay willowherb (Epilobium augustifolium), and bedstraws (Galium sp.) and has been found on himalyan balsam (Impatiens glandulifera), and fushia (Fuchsia sp.).

Emporer Moth (Saturnia pavonia)

Seen May to August



Found on heathland and moorland bogs, hedgerows, sand dunes and other scrubby places.

Feeds mainly on woody plants, heather (Calluna vulgaris), bramble (Rubus fruticosus), hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna), blackthorn (Prunus spinosa), sallow (Salix sp.) and birch (Betula sp.).

Fox Moth (Macrothylacia rubi)

Seen June to April



Found on heath and moorland, damp meadows, coastal grassland and in woodland glades.

Feeds on heather (Calluna vulgaris), creeping willow (Salix repens) and bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus), bramble (Rubus fruticosus), meadowsweet (Fillipendula ulmaria)and salad burnet (Sanguisorba minor).

Garden Tiger Moth (Arctia caja)

Seen August to June



Found in many open habitats including gardens, meadows, scrubby sand dunes, and woodland rides.


Feeds on various herbaceous plants, nettle (Urtica dioica), broad leaved dock (Rumex obtusifolius), burdock (Arctium sp.), hounds tongue (Cynoglossum officinale), and garden plants.

Knot Grass Moth (Acronicta rumicis)

Seen May to July in north.



Widespread in gardens, grassland, heath, wetland and woodland edges,

Feeds on herbaceous and some woody plants. Broadleaved dock (Rumex obtusifolius), common sorrel (Rumex acetosa), plantain (Plantago sp.), water mint (Mentha aquatica), bramble (Rubus fruticosus), hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna), burnet rose (Rosa pimpinellifolia) and sallow (Salix sp.).

Large White Butterfly (Pieris brassicae)

Seen May to September



Is very common in gardens, cultivated land and open flowery grassland.


Feeds on brassicas, garden nasturtiums (Tropaeolum majus), wild crucifers and wild mignonette (Reseda lutea).

Found on Heath and moorland, woodland edges, hedgerows, fens, downland and sea cliffs.

Feeds on heather (Calluna vulgaris), bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus), bramble (Rubus fruticosus), sallows (Salix sp.) and other woody plants.

Seen May to September



Found in most open habitats.


Feeds on heather (Calluna vulgaris), broom (Cytisus scoparius), ragwort (Senecio sp.) and plantain (Plantago sp.) as well as many herbaceous plants.
