Birdwatching around the North Tees Marshes

This map shows the location of some of the more important pools in the area that is often referred to as the North Tees marshes. Most of these pools are man made or at least caused by the action of industry on what would originally have been part of the much bigger Tees estuary. Reclamation of the land during the last 100 years or more has resulted in low lying land with a high water table and in some cases still affected by salt. This makes the pools attractive to wading birds as the almost continually muddy fringes makes some of the marshes similar to the estuary.
